It is a beautiful summer day. The sun is shining brightly. A gentle breeze blows from the west and rustles the leaves of the trees in the back yard. You walk out to the deck off the sun room and take your place in a comfortable deck chair, your cool drink placed on the table beside you. What could make the day better?
How about the gentle sound of trickling water as it cascades over the sides of a beautiful outdoor fountain. The sound and sight of water is both beautiful and relaxing. An outdoor fountain will not only add beauty and atmosphere to your home, but value too. It will be a great conversation piece at your outdoor parties and gatherings. The fountain you choose can be anything from a small, free standing one to a large, elaborate installation. The possibilities are endless. It is all up to you.
Free standing units are available at most home improvement stores. In most cases you simply take it home, place it where you want it, add water, and plug in the pump. Then sit back and relax. There are many different free standing units available. Little girls with birds, two tier, three tier, vases and so on. They are made of plastic, ceramic, concrete, metal; the choice is yours. They are both inexpensive and easy to install and maintain. Also flowing water creates negative ions which enhance your relaxation.
What if you want to be more elaborate and have a larger budget? No problem. You can buy all the required parts to create your own masterpiece. Start with a fountain tub of your choice and add pumps, tubing, rocks and bricks of all types. Gnomes, urchins, animals and cherubs are waiting for you to place in and around your fountain to add your personal touch and creativity. You can create your fountain on your patio to add all the charm and atmosphere you desire to your home.
There are things to remember when you add your fountain. Most will require one or more electric pumps to circulate the water. Be sure the pump you purchase is UL approved for immersion in water. You will need to be sure the cord for the pump is routed in a safe manner and plugged into a GFCI receptacle. If there is any question about the electrical requirements for you particular fountain be sure to check with a licensed electrician before you install it. A fountain can only be enjoyable if it is safe.
If you are putting your fountain on a wooden deck you want to be sure it will support the added weight. Smaller, free standing units are probably not too heavy for most decks, but if you create your own it could be quite weighty. If you have any doubts check with a building contractor or you local building inspector. You may also need to add chemicals to your fountain to keep the water running clear. Your building supplier can help with that.
Now, sit back and enjoy your new deck fountain. I love sitting by my water fountain when I get home from a hard day at work. It kind of washes the stress away.
